So this is a couple of weeks old at this point, but I tracked back and I don't think we discussed it, save FFT's Lahm piece. I'm mostly posting it because there's also a host of interesting analytical pieces about people's overall careers/legacies rather than just knee-jerk reactions from each game.

Plus they provided the infographics so [livejournal.com profile] mrsvixen doesn't have to make them :P

Tottenham's Gareth Bale has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year. The 21-year-old beat six other players to the vaunted award and becomes the fourth Welshman to be honoured, after Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs.

"I am more than delighted, really," he said. "It is a massive award and it is a great honour to receive, especially from other fellow professionals. It is an honour, really, when you look at the names that have won it before and it just makes you go 'wow'.

"There haven't been too many Welshman to have won the trophy but it is great and it is great for me personally. And it is not just for me, it is for all my team-mates that have helped me through the season and it is kind of for everyone, really."

"I think it is due to a bit of everything, really," he added. "At the beginning I wasn't really playing much and I always believed in myself that, if I did get a run in the team – which I eventually did – that I would be able to prove what I can do." That did happen and I kind of never really looked back from there."Playing in a good team with good players definitely helped me a lot and all the boys have been fantastic, the manager has been fantastic, giving me my chance, and it is something I want to improve on."

The other six players nominated for the award were Charlie Adam, Samir Nasri, Scott Parker, Carlos Tevez, Rafael van der Vaart and Nemanja Vidic. Samir Nasri scooped second place and Carlos Tevez, third.

Bale was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year but that award went to Jack Wilshere of Arsenal.

The 19-year-old has attracted plaudits from fans and pundits alike for his performances this season, in which he has established himself as a key player for England.

"It is my first full season and it is a massive award, especially from my fellow players," he said. "It is amazing. I am very proud to be the fifth recipient from Arsenal, it is good to keep this history going. Arsenal is a good club for bringing youngsters through and they keep proving it so I would like to thank the manager as well. I am delighted just to be in the team."

Premier League Team of the Year

Sagna (Arsenal), Cole (Chelsea), Vidic (Man Utd), Kompany (Man City)

Nani (Man Utd), Nasri (Arsenal), Wilshere (Arsenal), Bale (Tottenham)

Tevez (Man City), Berbatov (Man Utd).

Seriously, why do we let players vote for each other? Bale was a good player at the start of the season but definitely not PoTY, I would say either Vidic (and not just because I'm a Utd fan) or Scott Parker should have won, and the fact Parker isn't n the Team of the Year is a disgrace.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

Deloitte's Football Rich List has been released and it makes interesting reading given the FFP rules are to come into effect in two seasons time. It's probably the best indicator of who will meet the requirements and who is living dangerously close to the edge of oblivion. The main bit is that Real Madrid will not be moved as the World's Richest Club, nor will Barcelona in 2nd, Manchester United in 3rd or Bayern Munich in 4th or Arsenal in 5th who make up the top 5 yet again. But do not fear, 7 Premier League clubs made the top 20 due to the bumper £1.4bn overseas TV deal the Premier League has as well as various commercial endevours each club has undertaken in the last year. It kind of shows how commericially strong the PL is outside of it's own country and remains the one place where the PL has the upperhand over the other European clubs.

Premier League clubs occupied seven of the top 20 places in the league, though the first two spots were filled by Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Madrid generated £359.1 million despite a relatively disappointing season domestically and in Europe, while Barcelona had an income of £325.9 million.

Manchester United were the highest-ranked British club with £286.4 million, followed by Arsenal (fifth, £224.4 million), Chelsea (sixth, £209.5 million), Liverpool (eighth, £184.5 million), Manchester City (11th, £125.1 million), Tottenham (12th, £119.8 million) and Aston Villa (20th, £89.6 million).

City produced the biggest increase in revenue of any European club, up £38 million on the previous year, though it failed to keep up with players’ wages, which were 107 per cent of turnover.

While the revenue figures across Europe were striking - the top 20 clubs generated £3.5 billion between them, up eight per cent on 2008-09 - they painted only a partial picture.

Cost controls, specifically player wages, were shown to be still a major challenge across the game, and all of the English clubs in the table, with the exception of Arsenal, recorded a loss last season.

The Deloitte analysis emphasised the importance of Champions League football to the elite clubs, and the fixed nature of the leading contenders.

The same clubs occupied the top 10 places as in 2008-09 with the top six unchanged, and only two clubs, including Villa, were new to the top 20.

Dan Jones, a partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said: “All bar three of the top 20 clubs achieved revenue growth during 2009-10 showing the continued resilience of football’s top clubs as the full impact of the global economic downturn took hold.
