Game Fixing Rattles Soccer Around World

International soccer authorities and law enforcement officials are struggling to combat rampant game fixing by what they describe as sprawling networks of organized crime, a problem that has plagued the sport for decades but appears to have intensified recently.

Game-fixing scandals are engulfing men’s professional leagues around the world, from Turkey, whose top officials are meeting this week to determine whether the coming season will have to be delayed pending an investigation, to South Korea, where dozens of players have been indicted over the past several weeks. Authorities attribute the apparent burst of fixing cases to sophisticated criminal operations based in Singapore, Malaysia and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Stavros Psomiadis, owner of the top-tier soccer club Kavala, is one of 84 people in Greece who were arrested last month.

because if there's any organization i trust to root out and destroy corruption, it's definitely FIFA.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

(AKA another party post / another reason for me to love on our Aussies)

G'day Hi, friends!

The Asian Football Confederation Annual Awards Gala of 2010 was held on the Wednesday just past, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Japan picking up a cool 7 awards, and, because I'm biased/proud, Australia picking up a sweet 4.
The awards included a Fair Play award, Club of the Year, National Team of the year, Male/Female Referee of the Year, Futsal Player of the Year, and more.

Note that the AFC's rules for accepting the awards are a little stupid, in that the recipient MUST be present at the gala event, however they are not told the winners until the recipients are announced on the night, thus making it very difficult for players from clubs overseas (*coughTIMCAHILLcough*) or even out of the country at the time, and thus also rendering them ineligible for the award because they aren't able to attend.
HOWEVERRR that's not to say that those who DID receive the awards weren't worthy! :) Personally I thought they were fabulous choices, just that the rules are a bit silly.

Behind the LJ-cut is the list of all the awards and the winners, and there may or may not be a party post for Australia. ;D /totally subtle
(If anyone has stuff to add for the other countries, BY ALL MEANS PLEASE PIFF 'EM THIS WAY! ♥).

Ki Sung-Yueng signs for Celtic

South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng said he hoped to have a similar impact at Celtic as Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura after signing a four-year deal with the Scottish Premier League club on Monday.

The 20-year-old FC Seoul player, voted Asian Young Player of the Year after helping his country reach next year's World Cup finals, put pen to paper at a packed news conference in Seoul.

"I am really happy everything has been completed now. As soon as I signed a contract with Celtic I started to learn more and more about the club," Ki told Celtic's website.

"I used to watch Shunsuke Nakamura when I was young, especially when he played for Celtic and he did a great job for the club. This club is one of the biggest and best in the world and I know playing for Celtic will make me a better player."

Japan's Nakamura spent four years at Celtic, being named Scotland's Player of the Year in 2007, before joining Spanish club Espanyol this year.

His playing style has earned him the title of being the Korean Gerrard. --- wikipedia says that, not me )

Soccer and the entertainment industry are definitely two different worlds, but they both share a common point: Fans. The 5 shining members of SHINee who have always been working hard with their fans were very excited about the visit of Manchester United to Korea after 2 years. Let's listen to the Manchester United love of Onew, Taemin, Jonghyun, Minho and Key.

Really happy to meet you all! What do you first think of when 'Man United' is mentioned?

Onew: Player Park Ji-Sung! I heard that Park Ji-sung has flat foot, and it's very difficult for those with flat foot whether in terms of their lifestyle or in sport, so I really like his hardworking side.

Taemin: Player Park Ji-sung is someone who represents us as he work overseas. He lets the world know about Korea, he's handsome and I really respect him.

HC nets two from Torres

HarperCollins has snapped up Liverpool and Spain striker Fernando Torres in a two-book deal.

Jonathan Taylor, non-fiction publishing director, bought world rights excluding Spain from David Luxton from Luxton Harris for an undisclosed sum. Torres signed the deal at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Liverpool last week with HarperCollins editorial director Tom Whiting.

On signing the deal, Torres said: "It is a very special time in my life. Much has happened to me in these past few years. As a Spanish footballer playing in the most exciting league in the world, I'm really looking forward to this new challenge of sharing my
experiences." The first book in the deal will be published in the autumn. Whiting said: "It's an illustrated narrative celebration of a remarkable two years on Merseyside, alongside snapshots from his early career in Spain. Framed within 25 pivotal themes in the life of Torres, it will offer a unique window on the former Atlético Madrid wonderkid's world, on and off the pitch, and an insight into what inspires him and what motivates him."

The book will be written by Spanish journalist Antonio Sanz and translated into English by Guardian Spanish-football
journalist Sid Lowe. The schedule and content for the second title is
currently unconfirmed. The 25-year-old Spanish international signed from Atlético Madrid in July 2007, for a fee of around £26.5m. The number nine has scored 49 goals in 82 games in his two seasons at
Liverpool. Torres also scored the winning goal in the 2008 European Championship final against Germany.

HarperCollins' Taylor said: "Liverpool players have a fantastic track record in terms of book sales. You only have to look at the success of titles by Steven
Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler. He's made a huge impact in two seasons and seems on the cusp of becoming one of
Liverpool's greats."
