Racism remains a "significant problem" in British football despite improvements in recent years, according to a House of Commons committee report.

The report responds to "continuing concerns" following the Patrice Evra-Luis Suarez and John Terry cases.

John Whittingdale MP, chair of the inquiry, said: "Recent incidents of racist abuse in the UK highlight that there remain significant problems."

MPs also said homophobia may now be the most prevalent form of discrimination. )

Later, from 18:00CEST, in an open-top bus, the players will make their particular parade the streets of Madrid, until 20:30CEST to arrive at the Plaza de Cibeles ."

Special award for "impressive" Irish fans

European football’s governing body is to give a special award to fans of the Republic of Ireland for their behaviour in Euro 2012 co-host Poland, UEFA’s secretary-general, Gianni Infantino, said on Saturday.

Irish fans captured Polish hearts in particular after their 4-0 defeat to Spain in the Baltic port city of Gdansk with their good cheer and song. Indeed so moved was Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that he told his fellow commentators from French TV channel TF1 to stop commentating and listen to the fans as the match drew to a close.

“At the end of the match, when the world champions were resting on their laurels on the field, Irish fans stood and sang for five minutes, as if victory were theirs. How can you not love Ireland?” asked the centre-left Gazeta Wyborcza daily.

Euro 2012: Uefa president Michel Platini reveals plans to stage Euro 2020 all over continent

Turkey had been favourites to host the event but doubt has been placed over their ability to stage the event due to their ongoing bid for Istanbul to host the Olympic Games in the same year. It would be impractical to host both, so Uefa are having to look at alternatives.

"The Euros in 2020 could be held all over Europe," said Platini. "We are just thinking about it. I have said 12 or 13 host cities, it could be 24 or 32." "It would be four games per venue and everyone has the possibility to host it."

The logistical issue of supporters travelling to random venues all over Europe did not seem to be a problem in Platini's mind, even if the example he used had very little to do with the present tournament, being co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. "It is easier to go from London to Paris or Berlin than Cardiff to Gdansk," he said. A final decision would be taken in "January or February". "We wouldn't have to build stadiums or airports. That could be important in an economic crisis".

By 2020, the Euros will be a 24-team competition. The expansion takes effect in France four years from now and seems to bloat a competition that has worked perfectly well over the past three weeks. "I didn't take the decision but I am not worried about it," said Platini."We had three World Cups with 24 teams, so I don't see that as a problem. If you consider Norway, Serbia, Belgium and Scotland, plus some others, we have enough good teams for a 24-team competition."

Source: Wall Street Journal "It's OK to Root for Germany"

A version of this article appeared June 25, 2012, on page B8 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal, with the headline: A New Take on Germany.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Somewhere between Gdansk and Warsaw

A very strange thing happened the past two weeks as I traipsed through Poland covering the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.

There I was oohing over the latest Mario Gomez goal for Germany, salivating over the way Mesut Özil quarterbacks the German attack from the middle of the field with grace and calm, and screaming "SCHWEINSTEIGER" inside my head (there is no better name in sports right now) each time the steely midfielder plants for one of his lightning strikes at the goal.
And don't get me started on the Germans' dashing, Zen master coach Joachim Löw—the George Clooney of international soccer, only better looking, and seemingly more humble and philosophical.

To understand just how weird a development this is, understand that for Jewish-Americans of a certain age (I'm 42), rooting for Germany isn't how our fathers, grandfathers and Hebrew School teachers raised us.

Go on reading screaming "SCHWEINSTEIGER" )

The Juventus man believes that gay people should be not be discriminated against and lamented the fact that one's sexual orientation is still such a taboo topic within football.

Claudio Marchisio has revealed that he is in favor of same-sex marriage, less than a week after Italy teammate Antonio Cassano admitted that he hopes there are no homosexuals in the Azzurri squad.

The AC Milan striker was asked about the issue following claims from Italian journalist Alessandro Cecchi Paone that there were two gay players in the current panel and that he knew this because he had a relationship with one, who told him about the other.

Cassano was heavily criticized over his outburst and Marchisio has now lamented the fact that there is still so much intolerance within the game when it comes to the issue of homosexuality.

“Personally, I agree with marriage between persons of the same sex,” the Juventus midfielder told Vogue.

“But in our particular environment, in fact, the topic is a bit rigid. If someone comes out at their workplace, fortunately it is no longer a sensation."

“Doing so at a football training camp, however, one cannot imagine the same scene. It is not fair.

Marchisio then attacked the media's unfair portrayal of Italy striker Mario Balotelli as something of an enfant terrible, even if he is aware that the Manchester City man is sometimes his own worst enemy.

"Sometimes he does naive things," the Turin native acknowledged. "And one almost has the impression that he does not really want to become an adult.

"But no one ever writes that, above all else, he is truly a good person. But we know it."

Marchisio is expected to start for Italy in Monday's must-win Euro 2012 Group C clash with Ireland in Poznan.

Stadium monitors tell UEFA some 300 Croatian fans made monkey noises at Balotelli

WARSAW, Poland - UEFA fined Croatia’s football association (euro) 80,000 ($101,000) on Tuesday after fans racially abused Italy forward Mario Balotelli at a European Championship match.

In today's game against Spain, these psycho assholes threw a FLARE on the field... )

Glad the UEFA is finally doing something about the disgusting racism fans are exhibiting. It's also fucking crazy that stadium officials nearly strip search journalists but won't even touch the psychotic fans bringing in missiles and flares. WTF UEFA?

More than 35 million viewers in the two countries tune in for the grudge match.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Germany vs. The Netherlands is arguably the biggest rivalry in international soccer, and it translated to record ratings when the two teams met Wednesday night in the first round of the Euro 2012 Championships.

In Germany, 27.2 million viewers tuned in to public broadcaster ZDF to watch their side defeat the Dutch 2-1 and all but guarantee that the German team will advance to the quarterfinals. The figure -- representing 75 percent of the viewing audience on the night -- was a record for a first-round match at the Euros. In the key 14-49 demographic, a jaw-dropping 80 percent of the audience watched the game.

England's challenge at Euro 2012 almost was drastically undermined after the team's tactics were leaked to rival Sweden by a snooping journalist.

Ola Billger, 40, used binoculars to spy on England coach Roy Hodgson as he outlined his defensive plan to his team at a Kiev hotel ahead of last Friday's Group D clash.

Billger watched for 40 minutes and compiled detailed notes as Hodgson ran his players through his strategy for defending free-kicks and corners.  Billger then passed on the information to his own national team, which gladly accepted the dossier.

England went on to concede twice from free-kicks to Sweden before coming back to win 3-2, knocking the Scandinavians out of the competition.

Billger, who writes for Stockholm paper Svenska Dagbladet, said he stumbled on the briefing by chance, but was not going to let the opportunity to grab an advantage for his nation slip away.

"I just happened to look out of my third-floor window when I saw Roy Hodgson through a glass roof below," he told The S*n. "I realized I was watching his team briefing and slideshow so decided to take a closer look with my binoculars."

He added, "England decided to lay all their secrets out before me. What was I supposed to do -- look away? I called the Swedish camp straight away and they seemed delighted."

An England source told The S*n, "It's not nice being spied on and bad form of the Swedes to accept information obtained in such an underhand fashion."
