Barcelona chief Sandro Rosell says Europe's top clubs wants to expand the Champions League - and will push ahead with a breakaway league if they don't get their way.

In a strongly-worded appearance at the Aspire4Sport conference in Doha, Rosell said that the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the European Club Association and UEFA will expire in 2014 and that, as yet, there is no agreement to extend it.

Rosell, the ECA's vice-president, is at the forefront of efforts by leading clubs to have fewer international fixtures.

"If UEFA does not accept, in the worst case scenario, we will go away from UEFA," he said. "Nobody wants this situation."

Rosell revealed that many top clubs want to play Champions League games at weekends but that leagues would have to be dramatically slashed accordingly.

He continued: "It's something all of them would have to agree to. That includes the Premier League, who would have to reduce from 20 to 16 (teams).

"If you explain the idea properly, at the end of the day it's the best way of implementing the competitions in the near future.

"We want a bigger Champions League and hope one day we could play perhaps Barcelona versus Manchester United on Saturdays.

"That's what we are aiming for but to increase doesn't necessarily mean to do it with UEFA."

Rosell added: "We want to have the Champions League under the UEFA umbrella but we want UEFA to hear our demands.

"If UEFA and the ECA reach an agreement then that's good for both parties. If not, with or without the UEFA umbrella, the ECA is entitled to organise their own champions' competition by themselves of course.

"We are not trying to eliminate dates for national teams - but the number of days our players are used by the national associations is huge."

SMH!! So he wants to reduce domestic leagues just so they can make even more money. No thank  you.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

The agent of Mesut Ozil has hinted the Werder Bremen star would love a move to Barcelona.

Reports suggest Barcelona have stepped up their interest in Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Ozil and are willing to offer cash plus Alex Hleb to secure the Germany international’s services.

The 21-year-old has been outstanding during the World Cup in South Africa, being particularly impressive in the victories against Australia and England.

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is a big fan of the player who joined Werder in 2008 for Euros 4.3million.

Belarus international Hleb is deemed to be surplus to requirements at Camp Nou and has played in the Bundesliga before with Stuttgart.

The 29-year-old has started only 12 matches for Barca following his move from Arsenal two years ago.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes believes the capture of Michael Ballack will be a big help to the club’s youngsters.

The Germany international has agreed to return to Bayer, who he played for between 1999 and 2002, after being released by Chelsea at the end of last season.

"Michael is going to be the attraction of the league," a thrilled Heynckes told Bild. "It is incredible that such a fantastic player is now back in Leverkusen.

"I would never have thought that he would sacrifice so much money and I told him this.

"He will give us dominance in midfield, a goalscoring threat from free-kicks and the youngsters can learn a great deal from him.”
