Wayne Rooney’s name was requested on more replica football shirts around the world in the 2010-11 season than that of any other player in the Premier League, according to official data just released.
Sales of ‘Torres’ shirts for Liverpool and Chelsea combined in 2010-11 were lower than for Rooney alone.
Rooney’s success is all the more remarkable given that he announced he wanted to leave United in October – an act that might reasonably have been greeted by a drop in supporter loyalty. But that wasn’t the case. It seems Rooney’s sales were given a boost after agreeing to stay with the club.
Rooney is the first United player to top the sales charts since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007-08.
The full top 10 for 2010-11 are in the graphic below, as are the top three sellers for the previous three seasons.
The top 10 is published in the Premier League Season Review 2010-11, and is based on worldwide sales of official names and numbers, compiled by Sporting iD, which since 1993 has developed the technology behind the official players’ and replica products of the Barclays Premier League.
Total sales figures are never provided but it is understood that Rooney shirts sold a total of several hundred thousand to hit the No1 spot.
As this website reported exclusively in August last year (in reports linked here, and linked here), Manchester United have sold more official replica shirts worldwide in recent years than any other English Premier League club.
Typically United have sold between 1.2m and 1.5m shirts per year since 2005, with Liverpool next (900,000-plus in recent times, it is understood), followed by Arsenal and Chelsea.

Michael Owen Extends United Contract

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has signed a new one-year deal at the club.
Owen's previous deal expired at the end of the season, but United have taken up the option to extend it for a further 12 months.
The 31-year-old played a bit-part role in United's title-winning campaign this season, making only 11 Premier League appearances and starting just once.
Owen has always maintained his desire to stay at United and he is delighted to win the contract extension and is already looking forward to next season
"I'm delighted to have agreed a one-year extension to my contract," Owen told the club's official website.
Inspiration
"To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration.
"I can't wait for next season to start."
Sir Alex Ferguson was happy to keep the former Liverpool man at Old Trafford for another 12 months.
"Michael has proved to be a top footballer. It's unfortunate Michael didn't get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable.
"I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season."

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.
The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."
The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.
With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.
Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.
Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

• Owen injured again during recovery from hamstring problem
• Striker says he 'will be out for the next few weeks'

The Manchester United striker Michael Owen will be out of action for a few more weeks with a muscle injury sustained in training while recovering from a hamstring problem.
"It's not going great. I had a bit of a tight groin a while ago and I've trained for a week preparing for last night's game [3-2 Carling Cup win over Wolves] but then I had a setback," he told 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire.
"Unfortunately, that ruled me out for last night and will rule me out for a few weeks as well."
Owen, who has scored 40 goals in 89 England appearances, has been blighted by injuries in the latter part of his career but is determined to bounce back.
"I got injured in the cup final and then subsequently this season I was in the squad for the first 10 games or so," he added.
"But unfortunately because of a training ground injury the other day I'm going to be out for the next few weeks, which is disappointing.
"It's all part and parcel of football. Everyone gets injured. Hopefully, I can come back and be as strong as ever."
Since starting in the Community Shield match in August, Owen has made six appearances for United this season, scoring two goals in the Carling Cup victory over Scunthorpe in September before following up with a crucial late equaliser against Bolton four days later.
Despite his setbacks at United, Owen insisted he is happier playing infrequently for a big club challenging for trophies than for a smaller team where he might get more opportunities.
"I've played in some of the biggest clubs in the world over my career and I've had not such a good time at certain clubs where I've been in the relegation zone struggling away," he stated.
"Training with top players every day, being among the elite players is what I enjoy doing more.
"And if that means not playing as much but playing in a good team with good players creating chances, then I'd prefer to do that than slog away every week and hardly get a touch of the ball."
Owen also missed the final three months of last season with injury.

• Deficit is despite club making record turnover of £286.4m
• Figures likely to spark fresh anti-Glazer protests by United fans

Manchester United today posted record losses of £83.6m despite increased turnover, largely due to interest repayments and one-off financial charges relating to the bond issue that was the catalyst for fierce protests against the Glazers.
The bond issue, billed as a way to restructure United's long-term debt but which also made provision for the owners to take out up to £127m in the first year, resulted in a string of one-off costs that pushed the club to record losses. The Manchester United chief executive, David Gill, will be able to argue that the club is still growing its revenues and competing at the top level despite calls for boycotts from some fans, as well as a record group-operating profit of £100.8m. But those same fans will point to the figures as proof that their ticket and TV subscription money is going on servicing debt rather than players or facilities.
The club's total debt stood at £521.7m at the end of the year to 30 June, according to the results. The Glazers also owe a further £225m in high-interest PIK loans, which are secured against their shareholding in United and now accrue at 16.25% per annum.
The results show that turnover has increased to a record £286.4m thanks to increased matchday, broadcasting and commercial income. The latter has risen by 16.5% to £81.4m, partly due to the effect of the deals signed with Aon and Nike being felt over a full year and partly as a result of the Glazers' aggressive strategy to grow overseas sponsorship revenues.
Media revenues also increased by 5.1% on the previous year as new broadcasting deals kicked in to £104.8m, but matchday revenues were down 7.9% to £100.2m.
The club said that could be attributed to fewer matches being played at home, and partly as a result of only reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League as opposed to the final the previous year.
But despite that record turnover – and a £12.7m income from player sales – the club's £40.21m interest bill, a £40.6m charge relating to an interest-rate swap agreement that had to be terminated in order to allow the bond issue to proceed and a £19.2m exchange rate hit all contributed to the £83.6m net loss.

• Macheda makes comment while on Italy Under-21 duty
• 'Rooney is a great person, but he's a bit of a chav'
Federico Macheda may have some explaining to do on his return to Old Trafford from Italy Under-21 duty after describing his Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney as a "chav".
"Rooney is a really great person, he always gives me advice, but he's a bit of a coatto," Macheda told the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.
Coatto is a Roman slang term that is translated by online dictionary wordreference.com as "young urban working class person with vulgar and sometimes violent behaviour", but understood in the same way a "chav" would be in English.
Macheda also played down reports that he is considering a move to Lazio, saying he was keen to succeed with United. "I want to grow at Manchester, when I am older I can make decisions about what to do next," he said. "I am told that Ferguson has called me 'unsellable'. That is a very satisfying thing to hear.
"I feel more of an English footballer now, and now I speak the language with an accent that is more English than Roman. The rumours about Lazio please me, but I don't believe I'll go."
His Italy Under-21 team-mate, Vito Mannone, however, suggested that he might look to leave Arsenal if he wasn't given more first-team opportunities in the near future.
"Last year I played nine matches and Arsenal never lost with me in the team," he told Gazzetta. "They tried again with Almunia, then against Chelsea it was [Lukasz] Fabianski. It hurts not to be playing, especially when the other two aren't doing brilliantly."

Wayne Rooney will miss up to three weeks of action for club and country, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed tonight.
The striker, who has been short of form and goals all season, was substituted with half an hour left against Bolton in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday and did not travel with the United squad for their Champions League match against Valencia tomorrow night.
The injury update from Ferguson means Rooney will miss the league game at Sunderland on Saturday and also England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.
Ferguson also confirmed that midfielder Paul Scholes will be sidelined for 10 days with a calf problem.
"It will be two to three weeks," said Ferguson.
"But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past."

Mata expecting a battle
Valencia midfielder Juan Mata is expecting a physical clash when they play Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
Mata knows the Premier League is strong and fast-paced and thinks his team-mates will need to be at their best to succeed.
"British teams are very physical and the pace of the games is much faster than in Spain," explained Mata.
"In physical terms, we'll have to be at our peak.
"But we also have to stick to our football philosophy and keep possession of the ball and hopefully that will be enough."
Mata has also confirmed he is a huge admirer of Ryan Giggs and is disappointed not to be facing his boyhood idol.
Despite United missing a number of key players for the match Mata is wary of the threat they will pose due to their squad depth.
"Ryan Giggs has been a player I have liked very much since I was little," he continued.
"He is a big loss because of his professionalism and experience but for sure whoever takes his place will do their best.
"They'll be missing important players but I think they have a big enough squad to cope."

Jamie Carragher fulfils boyhood dream of scoring for Everton against Liverpool in Anfield testimonial
Defender on target at both ends in star-studded derby...

Jamie Carragher’s testimonial at Anfield ended in a 4-1 victory for Liverpool and saw the veteran fulfil a lifetime ambition and score for his boyhood club Everton, with an own goal penalty.
The Reds boasted a side that included former stars Jason McAteer, Luis Garcia, Emile Heskey and somewhat controversially, Manchester United striker Michael Owen for the veteran's big day. England captain Steven Gerrard also made a brief appearance for the first 10 minutes after being given special dispensation from Fabio Capello to take part.

Carra's Liverpool Dream Team

SINCE breaking into Liverpool’s first team 13 years ago, Jamie Carragher has played alongside all those who have established themselves as modern Anfield greats.
From Steve McManaman through to Fernando Torres, Carragher has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the men who will be revered forever more and seen at first hand what separates the great from the good.
There have been a number of fine teams in that period, but deciding on a definitive XI is easier said than done. Who, for example, leads the line? What formation would get the best out of them? Which men should pull the strings in the engine room?
Typically, though, Carragher – whose testimonial against Everton takes place at Anfield this afternoon – is up for the challenge of picking an all-star line up.
But there is one important rule: he can’t pick himself.
So, with that in mind, here he reveals the identity of a team he thinks would conquer all before them and score plenty of goals on the way. Some choices are predictable, others less so . . .

• Owen uncertain about reaction from Anfield crowd

Michael Owen is to pull on the colours of Liverpool for the first time since leaving the club six years ago after agreeing to brave a potential backlash from Manchester United's supporters by playing for his old team in Jamie Carragher's testimonial match. Owen, reviled by some Liverpool fans after crossing one of the game's oldest divides, is said to be uncertain of the reaction he will get from the Anfield crowd but does not have great expectations considering the abuse when he returned last season for the first time since joining their rivals at Old Trafford.
The former England striker has given his word to Carragher, however, that he will play in the match at Anfield on Saturday week, swapping the red of United for that of the team where he began his career. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has given him permission to play for 45 minutes and Owen will be in attack for a Liverpool XI taking on an Everton XI.Carragher has also persuaded Jamie Redknapp, Danny Murphy, Jason McAteer and Emile Heskey to play, but he had told Owen he would understand if he thought it was too delicate for him politically bearing in mind the rivalry between Liverpool and United.
There is also the distinct possibility that United's fans will not be too impressed about one of their players being willing to wear a Liverpool shirt, especially with their first encounter of the season to follow only two weekends later.
Owen, though, regards Carragher as one of his closest friends in football and the organisers hope the goodwill felt towards the long-serving Liverpool defender will persuade the Anfield crowd to go easy on their former player and maybe even demonstrate some warmth and appreciation for a man who scored over 200 goals for the club in eight years and has been described by Steven Gerrard as "the best striker in the history of Liverpool Football Club." (HAHA) Nonetheless, it is understood Owen will be given his own security on his way to and from the stadium.

This should be amusing. Aww bless, some people thinking because it's a testimonial, the Scousers will go easy on Owen. No chance. XD
