Arsène Wenger offered a particularly warm welcome to the visiting French contingent who found their way to Arsenal’s Hertfordshire training ground on the eve of Wednesday night’s Champions League rendezvous. He was all handshakes and convivial small talk about the south of France and after some reminiscing he wished them a good evening out in London. “I would like to give you some tips but I can’t,” he said, an admission of how he still isn’t any sort of man about town after all these years.

The vignette offered a reminder of how absorbed he has always been about management. During his 18 years living in London it has become a running joke that he knows his way between only three places – his home, the training ground and the stadium. That kind of focus was evident as he tried to reject the romantic idea that Arsenal versus Monaco is the match of his footballing life. “Not at all,” he shrugged, as if a last-16 tie could not possibly be a particular high point in his career. “Our job is all about tomorrow and the future.”

From Nani to Narnia, no theory is left unturned as Giles Smith asks who damaged the Manchester United dressing-room wall.

As you all know, a hole was left in the wall of Manchester United's Wembley dressing room following their semi-final FA Cup defeat to Manchester City last week. Many theories have been put forward to explain the origin of the hole for which Untied have been forced to pay a £50 fine. This morning, Times newspaper correspondent Giles Smith came up with seven possible scenarios so I though I'd share (they're worth a giggle or two...)

EXPLANATION 1
A freshly showered Javier Hernández asked Michael Carrick if he could borrow his Lynx Twist. Carrick agreed and lobbed the canister of deodorant across the room. Unfortunately, the Mexico forward was unable to reach it and the deodorant struck the wall, with immense force, 54 times in rapid succession, leaving a circular hole in the plasterboard three inches in diameter, for which United were later obliged to apologise to Wembley.

"without the oxygen of twitter, i die." )

Source. Who do you think in responsible for the hole? Wayne Rooney? Sir Alex himself? A host of recent Premier League referees?

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has lauded his young teammate Javier Hernandez suggesting the prodigiously gifted Mexican international is not just hugely talented but also has the endeavour to match his ability.

The Bulgarian international, who has scored 14 Premier League goals to Hernandez’s six, believes ‘Chicharito’ has a great future ahead of him but already a real threat.

Berbatov believes Hernandez’s predatory instincts in front of goal, coupled with his blistering pace is a lethal combination which has already tested Premier League defences in his debut season at Old Trafford.

Speaking about Hernandez, Berbatov told MUTV:

"Every time when he goes onto the pitch, the only thing in Javier's mind is to score goals," Berbatov said. "He is trouble for defenders. Everybody knows he is very quick. If you give him space and time he is very dangerous. He has done really well and the future is ahead of him because he is still young. I have seen the way he works in practice and after that in the gym. If he keeps going like that he has a great future."

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov told reporters to stop voting for him after being named Bulgaria's Footballer of the Year for a seventh time on Monday.

"I prefer to see some of the younger lads winning the award," the 29-year-old said after coming top in the poll of sports journalists.

"Please, don't vote for me anymore."

Bulgaria’s football star Dimitar Berbatov is expecting his second child with his long-term partner Elena, Bulgarian media have reported.

According to the reports, the Manchester United star and his girlfriend planned the baby in the summer. The result of the ultrasound has showed that their daughter Dea will have a baby brother, which will be named after the father of the football star – Ivan.

The couple is superstitious and does not want to announce officially the good news yet. When they were expecting their daughter Dea, they waited until the last moment to announce they were about to become parents.

During her previous pregnancy, Elena wore a red thread on her hand against evil eyes until giving birth. Then, a red thread was also put on little Dea’s hand.

Bulgarian media report that Elena has moved in Berbatov’s home in Manchester about two months ago. The couple has designed a room for their daughter and is now preparing one for their son, too.

However, Elena is expected to give birth in Bulgaria, with the help of the same medical team that helped her with Dea’s birth.

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov hails five-goal performance after 'worrying' slump.

The Manchester United forward admitted that his barren run had started to cause him sleepless nights, so he was delighted to help United put pressure on title rivals Chelsea with five goals in their 7-1 win over Blackburn.

"I don't think anybody could have guessed the scoreline," said Berbatov.

"In the end I'm pleased with the performance and the goals I scored, personally I was very impressed with myself.

"I've scored five before but it was a long time ago back home. To do it in the Premier League when only four other players have done it, to stand next to Shearer and Andy Cole is a great honour."

Berbatov's five-goal haul sends him to the top of the Premier League scorers' charts, but what looks like a superb statistic for a striker - 11 goals in 13 league appearances - masks the peaks and troughs of his autumn.

The Bulgarian began the season in the form of his Manchester United career, scoring six goals in five games culminating in a hat-trick against Liverpool. The brilliant overhead kick he executed for his second was the kind of audacious effort that only seems to come off for a player flush with confidence.

But that performance was followed by a slump in which Berbatov failed to score in 11 games. In the seven league outings following his heroics against Liverpool he managed just five shots on target. Eventually he was ignominiously dropped - not even picked for the bench - by Sir Alex Ferguson for United's game against Wigan last weekend.

So it is hardly surprising that Berbatov was, as he admitted after picking up the match-ball yesterday, "a little bit worried. When you are a striker people tend to only look at the goals you score."

"For me, it is more about how I play, the assists I give, how I link with other players," Berbatov said.

Wayne Rooney will miss up to three weeks of action for club and country, Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed tonight.

The striker, who has been short of form and goals all season, was substituted with half an hour left against Bolton in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday and did not travel with the United squad for their Champions League match against Valencia tomorrow night.

The injury update from Ferguson means Rooney will miss the league game at Sunderland on Saturday and also England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.

Ferguson also confirmed that midfielder Paul Scholes will be sidelined for 10 days with a calf problem.

"It will be two to three weeks," said Ferguson.

"But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past."

Mata expecting a battle

Valencia midfielder Juan Mata is expecting a physical clash when they play Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.

Mata knows the Premier League is strong and fast-paced and thinks his team-mates will need to be at their best to succeed.

"British teams are very physical and the pace of the games is much faster than in Spain," explained Mata.
"In physical terms, we'll have to be at our peak.

"But we also have to stick to our football philosophy and keep possession of the ball and hopefully that will be enough."

Mata has also confirmed he is a huge admirer of Ryan Giggs and is disappointed not to be facing his boyhood idol.

Despite United missing a number of key players for the match Mata is wary of the threat they will pose due to their squad depth.

"Ryan Giggs has been a player I have liked very much since I was little," he continued.

"He is a big loss because of his professionalism and experience but for sure whoever takes his place will do their best.

"They'll be missing important players but I think they have a big enough squad to cope."

Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his disappointment at the media reaction to United's victory over Liverpool.

Dimitar Berbatov

In a post-match interview, Sir Alex reflected on the thrilling victory and Dimitar Berbatov's superb hat-trick, and also referenced Fernando Torres' reaction to a foul by John O'Shea; saying: "Torres made a meal of it, an absolute meal of it. There is no doubt he tried to get the player sent off."

After finding subsequent reports emblazoned with suggestions that he had labelled the Liverpool striker 'a cheat', Sir Alex has questioned the media's focus in reporting the afternoon's events.

Speaking to MUTV, Sir Alex said: "If you think about Berbatov scoring a hat-trick - the first to score a hat-trick in 64 years in that game - you'd have thought that would get the back-page headlines, but that was stuck on the inside.

"It was all me saying Torres was a cheat, which was absolutely ridiculous press. I said, quite rightly, that I thought he had made the most of it. That's not to say the guy's a cheat. It could apply to any player in a given moment, taking advantage of a situation.

"But that was disappointing (from) a lot of the press. I thought Berbatov would have grabbed all the headlines, which he really did deserve."

• 'It could have been a cricket score' says Sir Alex Ferguson
• Accuses Fernando Torres of trying to get John O'Shea sent off

Berbatov and Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson's jubilation over Dimitar Berbatov's late winner in Manchester United's 3-2 defeat of Liverpool was followed by the provocative claim that his side should have won by a "cricket score".

United lost a two-goal lead, with Steven Gerrard scoring twice for Liverpool, and looked like they were going to surrender a winning position for a third successive league game until Berbatov completed his hat-trick five minutes from the end of normal time.

"At 2-0 it could have been a cricket score," Ferguson said. "Two-all was an absolute farce. It was a game we absolutely dominated and I was saying to myself, 'It could be 10.' So when it looked like ending 2-2, it would have been a travesty of a scoreline.

"They [Liverpool] had the momentum when it went to 2-2, but they never offered anything, did they? They had to depend on decisions from the linesman to get back into the game. [Edwin] van der Sar hasn't had a save to make, [Paul] Scholes was controlling the tempo in midfield and we looked dangerous up front, with Berbatov and Nani in particular. I couldn't see us losing the game."

Ferguson accused the Liverpool striker Fernando Torres of trying to get John O'Shea sent off in the challenge that led to the free-kick from which Gerrard scored his second. "I've watched it and Torres made a meal out of it," he said. "He made an absolute meal of it to try to get our player sent off."

In 36 years of management Ferguson has never lost a match in which his side have been two goals ahead. His remarks yesterday will be a lesson for Roy Hodgson, that the United manager seldom misses an opportunity to belittle his rivals.

United won the CS for the 14th time.

Man Utd's Nemanja Vidic:
"It's important to win, it's the last game of pre-season, and I think we did well today, especially a lot of players who haven't played much. It was important for Dimitar to score, he's been under a lot of pressure but I think he'll score more this season."

Man Utd's Javier Hernandez: "It's unbelievable to score and win this match. It's an unusual goal I scored, I kicked the ball to my face and it went in. All the team are nice people and we want to win the league. I'm so happy to be here."

Man Utd's Dimitar Berbatov: "It's a goal like any other, but it's a good day for me, especially as we won the game. The whole team performed very well and it doesn't matter who scores, it's important we win everything. Mine's was a goal, Javier's was a goal. If the ball's in the net, that's what counts."

• Premier League brings in rule that compels managers to talk
• Manchester United manager angered by 2004 documentary

sir alex ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson is considering abandoning his boycott of the BBC, thus ending one of the oldest grudges of his career, amid growing pressure from the Premier League and the League Managers Association (LMA). The Premier League has written to Manchester United explaining that Ferguson will face a sliding scale of punishments if he continues to ignore Match of the Day and 5 Live. Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the LMA, has had conversations with the Old Trafford manager to try to persuade him to put his grievances to one side.

The talks have been described as delicate and finely poised, with Ferguson dismayed by the idea that he may have to speak to the institution for the first time since a Panorama documentary in 2004, entitled Father and Son, about the business activities of his son Jason, then working as a football agent.

The Premier League has brought in a new rule stipulating that all managers must speak to the broadcasting rights-holders, which include the BBC, and there have been discussions behind the scenes, with Bevan acting as an intermediary to try to talk around one of the most famously stubborn managers in the business.

Ferguson's initial reaction was that he would ignore the new rule, regardless of the consequences, until his family received an apology from the BBC, which he has accused of "breathtaking arrogance".

Since then, however, there have been more high-level talks, with BBC officials and United's chief executive, David Gill, involved. The club are sympathetic to Ferguson's grievances but, behind the scenes, there is a feeling that it is becoming a battle he cannot win – at least if he wants to avoid a series of escalating fines.
