Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio agrees with same-sex marriage


The Juventus man believes that gay people should be not be discriminated against and lamented the fact that one's sexual orientation is still such a taboo topic within football.

Claudio Marchisio has revealed that he is in favor of same-sex marriage, less than a week after Italy teammate Antonio Cassano admitted that he hopes there are no homosexuals in the Azzurri squad.

The AC Milan striker was asked about the issue following claims from Italian journalist Alessandro Cecchi Paone that there were two gay players in the current panel and that he knew this because he had a relationship with one, who told him about the other.

Cassano was heavily criticized over his outburst and Marchisio has now lamented the fact that there is still so much intolerance within the game when it comes to the issue of homosexuality.

“Personally, I agree with marriage between persons of the same sex,” the Juventus midfielder told Vogue.

“But in our particular environment, in fact, the topic is a bit rigid. If someone comes out at their workplace, fortunately it is no longer a sensation."

“Doing so at a football training camp, however, one cannot imagine the same scene. It is not fair.

Marchisio then attacked the media's unfair portrayal of Italy striker Mario Balotelli as something of an enfant terrible, even if he is aware that the Manchester City man is sometimes his own worst enemy.

"Sometimes he does naive things," the Turin native acknowledged. "And one almost has the impression that he does not really want to become an adult.

"But no one ever writes that, above all else, he is truly a good person. But we know it."

Marchisio is expected to start for Italy in Monday's must-win Euro 2012 Group C clash with Ireland in Poznan.

Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at Germany for adopting players of Turkish origin and called upon football’s rulers to end the drain of talent from poorer countries.

Capello is still haunted by England’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Germans in last summer’s World Cup and raised the issue of citizenship when he addressed the Dubai International Sport conference.

‘A line needs to be drawn,’ said the Italian. ‘Richer clubs are talent-scouting and stealing players by bidding higher and not thinking about the consequences for those countries.

‘These players are acquiring new passports. Germany had five of Turkish origin who opted to represent them and we all know what happened.’

Germany’s squad for the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa contained 11 players who could have qualified for other countries. Capello claims Turkey would have been far stronger with the ‘five’ who opted to represent Germany but his facts are muddled. Two players of Turkish descent were in Joachim Low’s squad — Mesut Ozil and Serdar Tasci — and both were born in Germany.

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, who both scored against England in Bloemfontein, were born in Poland. Podolski moved to Germany aged two and Klose aged seven.

Ligue 1 Red Cards Homophobia


(Mini-Frenchie is down with the gays.)

In the US, it's been a huge deal that a couple of players in major sport have filmed PSAs against bullying and in favor of gay marriage in the last few weeks. L1 sees those two guys and raises them a Red Card Homophobia video (which I cannot get to embed) featuring a whole bunch of footballers with balls, including Giuly, Chalmé, and Pjanic. Additionally, Nice, Montpellier, PSG and Bordeaux have all signed a charter put forth by Paris Foot Gay against homophobia in football. Well done, L1.

sepp to stepp down??

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

Former England captain Paul Ince has condemned
Premier League footballers who wear snoods, baseball caps turned sideways, headphones - and tights.

"Back in my time, and I sound old now, it was black and white boots and that was it," the Notts County boss told Midlands Late Kick Off.

"Now you've got snoods, people wearing headphones when they are doing interviews, which I find disrespectful, pink boots, green boots, you name it they've got it, tights - they'll be wearing skirts next.

"You try to bring your kids up the right way and I think somewhere down the line managers have got to come together and say: 'Listen if you are doing interviews, you don't wear headphones, no hats, no silly stuff like that'. I don't think it's the way football should be played. We should all, as a managers' union, come together and stop all this. It's getting ridiculous I'm afraid.

"I'm sick and tired of seeing players, even when it's mild weather, wearing tights and these things [snoods] around their necks. It's not right.

"You see players coming off the buses with earphones around their ears. What ever happened to the art of conversation? You go into the changing room and they've all got their headphones on listening to their own bit of music. When I was at Inter Milan we used to have dinner together and talk together for two to three hours getting to know one another."

Ince, now 43, played for West Ham, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swindon and Macclesfield, where he was player-manager.

He has also managed MK Dons twice, Blackburn and now Notts County.

Liverpool reject £40 million bid from Chelsea for striker Fernando Torres



The Spanish international has been linked with a host of clubs over the past 12 months, including Manchester City and Barcelona, but Chelsea have made the first move.

A Liverpool spokesman said last night: "Chelsea have made an offer for Fernando, which has been rejected. The player is not for sale."

Premier League champions Chelsea are believed to have had a £52 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and defender Diego Godin rejected earlier this week, and have now turned their attentions closer to home.

But having met stiff resistance from the Anfield hierarchy, it remains uncertain whether they will improve their offer for Torres, who has shown signs in recent weeks of returning to his best form.

Mic captures Sky presenters' sexist diatribe against female linesman

Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys were at the centre of a sexism row last night after they questioned whether a female linesman knew the offside rule during a Premier League football match.

The commentators, who apparently believed their microphones were switched off, were recorded making disparaging remarks about Sian Massey, 25, before Liverpool’s Premiership clash with Wolves yesterday. They also criticised Apprentice star and West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady who had yesterday written about sexism in a newspaper column.

Commenting on Ms Massey, Mr Keys said: ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’

Mr Gray, a former Scottish international footballer, replied: ‘Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule.’

Mr Keys replied: ‘Course they don’t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish) will go potty. This isn’t the first time, is it? Didn’t we have one before?’

Later in the exchange, Mr Keys said: ‘The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.’

Ms Brady had said she had ‘experienced sexism at its rankest, lies about my personal life and a level of calculated mischief that is simply appalling’.

Asked about the pundits’ remarks, she said: ‘I think this just sums up everything I said in my column.’

During the game, which Liverpool won 3-0, Ms Massey angered Wolves by refusing to rule Raul Meireles offside before he set up Liverpool’s first goal. The replay showed that she made the correct decision.

When The Mail on Sunday put the transcript to Mr Keys, he said: ‘I have no recollection of that. I have no idea what you are talking about. My recollection is that I wished the young lady all the best.’

When told a recording existed of the conversation, he said: ‘If you have a tape then you don’t need me to talk to you.’

Last night The Mail on Sunday sent a transcript and a copy of the recording to a Sky Sports spokeswoman.

She was not able to confirm or deny the veracity of the clip, which was provided to this newspaper by an anonymous source.

I was half sleep when I flipped to this game (yes, I watched a Liverpool game). They showed her and my reaction was "what? wait...is that a woman?!?! YOU GO GIRL!!" I don't know if I had these two assholes as my commentators, but iirc, mine praised her for getting the call right/doing a fantastic job.

Landon Donovan wants Spousal Support?

 


Landon Donovan is making his split with wife Bianca Kajlich official. The 28-year-old soccer star filed for divorce in L.A. County Superior Court citing irreconcilable differences, TMZ reports.

According to the court papers, Landon and the 33-year-old Rules of Engagement actress, separated in 2009 after three years of marriage.

Landon, who plays for the L.A. Galaxy and scored several goals in the 2010 World Cup, is seeking spousal support from Bianca.

Over the summer, the couple attended the ESPY Awards together.

MARADONA COULD BECOME IRAN'S COACH



TEHERÁN -- President of Iran, Mahmud Ahmadineyad, wishes that the argentinean footballer Diego Armando Maradona becomes the next coach of his country's National Team, as informed by local newspaper Ebtekar.

The paper writes that the President nodded his head when a group of journalists asked him about the rumours that the player would visit Iran and take over the NT.

These rumous started on October 6th, when the president of the Football Federation of Iran, Alí Kafashián, revealed that they were getting ready for Maradona's visit.

The story behind his visit to Iran starts in 2007, when the player sent an autographed Argentina shirt as a gift to the president.

"I've already met Fidel (Castro, president of Cuba) and (Hugo) Chávez (president of Venezuela), so now I want to meet Iran's president. I'd like to meet Ahmadineyad personally," Maradona said a couple of years ago.

Months later, the president of Iran sent a letter to him in which he thanked the "kidness of his excellency towards the well-directed and revolutionary nation of Iran."

Iran and Argentina, however, don't hold a good relation after Buenos Aires accused several high ranked Iranians of being the intelectual responsibles of the bomb that killed dozens of people in the jewish center (AMIA) in Buenos Aires in 1994.

Rooney ruled out of Manchester United's trip to Valencia

Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Manchester United's Champions League game against Valencia on Wednesday due to an ankle injury picked up during yesterday's draw against Bolton Wanderers.

Sir Alex Ferguson has told club officials the 24-year-old will not be fit enough to make the trip after being withdrawn during the second half of yesterday's game.

It is unclear how long Rooney will be out for, but he could possibly miss United's trip to Sunderland on Saturday, while England will hope the striker will be able to participate in their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on 12 October.

Some may feel it is a good time for Rooney to have a break. On ESPN yesterday, the pundit Kevin Keegan voiced his concern for the striker, who has scored only one goal for United this season, a penalty against West Ham United.

Meanwhile Nemanja Vidic has told his team-mates to cut out the defensive lapses that are wrecking their title bid. United have conceded nine goals in five Premier League games so far this season, and are three points behind the leaders, Chelsea.

"It is a big concern that we are conceding so many away goals," said Vidic. "We have to stop doing it. We cannot let it happen again.

"Over the last few years we haven't given that many goals away or even allowed them so many chances. Before we have always looked strong, so this is not what we are used to. We have to play much better in our away games."

The Blues Machine

As if the prospect of facing last season's Double winners was not intimidating enough for Blackpool, their players will also be dwarfed by Chelsea in the tunnel today.

While some will focus on the number of world-class stars among them, the height and weight advantages of Carlo Ancelotti's muscular side are what will be most apparent before kick-off at Stamford Bridge. Welcome to the big time.

Blackpool's only consolation is that, although their regular team are one of the slightest in the Premier League, they are not alone in facing the possibility of being overpowered by Chelsea.

Arsenal, whom Chelsea have bullied (lol) in recent years, have fielded a team this season who are the smallest of the lot, so it is no surprise that manager Arsene Wenger wants referees to protect them.

'It's important to have power and physical strength in the team because a lot of the games here are physical,' said Ancelotti. 'We have a lot of players who are powerful and we also need to have a lot of tall players because sometimes on the setpieces you can have difficulties.'

Since Jose Mourinho was manager, Chelsea's recruitment has leaned towards powerful players such as Michael Essien. The indefatigable Ghana midfielder regularly runs eight miles or more in games and that sort of fitness, combined with the imposing strength, has been a factor in Chelsea's impressive start to the season.

They brushed their first five opponents aside, scoring 21 goals along the way, and another powerful performance is expected today.

'We have strong guys,' said John Obi Mikel. 'We have a lot of sixfooters. Even someone like Frank Lampard, you don't realise how strong he is. Essien is shorter but is very, very strong. Our physical presence through the middle with Didier Drogba up front and John Terry and Alex at the back really works well for Chelsea. Ashley Cole may be smaller but if you think he is a pushover, he is strong.'

How was this missed?

After reading about 4,237 different best XI of the decade lists, I thought I’d switch it up a bit. I wanted to consider not just the most gifted players of the Premier League or La Liga or Serie A, etc. but rather the most talented footballers who also possess the uncanny ability to make babies cry and camera lenses crack. Yes, it’s that time- the All Ugly World XI! These are the 11 players of world football who simultaneously make us cringe and smile. The footballing geniuses that fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Players like Carles Puyol: the Barca hardman who once took a ball to the face, prompting Gol TV commentator Phil Schoen to yelp, “Ouch!” and Ray Hudson to wittily (and accurately) retort, “Ah Phil, it doesn’t matter anyway, poor Carles”.

These eleven masters of the beautiful game aren’t just ugly, they’re downright hideous. And they aren’t just great players, they’re the cream of the crop; starters for their respective national teams and heroes at club level. They don’t win beauty contests, but they sure do win football matches. If you’re lucky enough, you might even see their deformed faces at this year’s World Cup in South Africa or in HD, or better yet- experience their hideous genius in 3D!

Whatever medium you choose, you can’t miss these eleven world beaters, those players with the unique ability to make you both erupt in applause and turn to stone.
