For those who don't know, Copa America is a CONMEBOL-based international football tournament held every four years. In 2011, we saw Uruguay win the tournament in Argentina. In 2015, will they be able to defend their title in Chile?

Although it is organized by CONMEBOL, they invite other national teams to participate in the tournament. This year, the guests are CONCACAF's Mexico and Jamaica. The winner of the tournament will earn the right to represent South America at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. (If Mexico and Jamaica are in the finals, then the highest-ranking CONMEBOL nation will go through.)

The draw for the group stage was held just a few hours ago and here are the participating groups:

Group A: Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia
Group B: Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Jamaica
Group C: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela

The two best teams of each group and the two best third-place teams will advance to the knockout stage.

Chile will kick things off on June 11, 2015 against Ecuador. Stars expected to compete at this tournament include Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., Alexis Sanchez, and James Rodriguez. Due to his nine-match ban, we will not see Luis Suarez play for Uruguay.

Also, here is the mascot:

Argentina and Brazil lead the fall of the Copa América giants

The giants woke up, but only to be felled. When Argentina and Brazil scored seven goals between them in their third group games at the Copa América, it seemed they were slowly rousing themselves for the march to a meeting in the final that the organisers had done everything in their power to make inevitable. In their quarter-finals, though, the problems of the opening games returned. Both struggled to make domination of possession count, both lost on penalties, and both will look on a barely credible semi-final line-up and wonder why on earth they are not there.

Peru had begun a weekend of shocks with their extra-time victory over Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay continued it with their shoot-out victories over the continent's giants and, as a full moon loomed over San Juan, Venezuela completed a full set of four quarter-final shocks, which seemed almost expected. Restaurateurs and hoteliers in Mendoza will be disappointed to have missed out on another Chilean invasion, while the rest of Argentina wallows in the gloom of another disappointment.

All the Copa adverts on television, featuring a smiling Lionel Messi and a goalscoring Carlos Tevez, feel oddly poignant now.

"El Chava" Returns to Football!

Salvador Cabañas, 30 year old Paraguayan and former Club America striker, is set to resume training on Thursday afternoon for the first time since he was shot in the head in January of last year.

The highly-rated striker was set to appear for the Albirroja in the World Cup, having played a massive part in their qualification campaign due to the injury of Roque Santa Cruz--going on to score the most goals in their entire campaign.

On January the 25th 2010, Cabañas was in a bar in Mexico with his wife in the early hours of the morning, when he was shot in the head at point-blank range--presumably during an argument over his footballing ability. The man believed to be responsible, "JJ", has since been apprehended. He was taken to a hospital in Argentina, where he made a remarkable recovery against all the odds. However despite hopes he would recover in time for the World Cup, the bullet could not be removed and doctors believed it was too dangerous for him to partake in the competition.

For various legal reasons he has been unable to return to his former club, and has instead resumed training with Club Libertad--one of the top sides in Paraguay.

"It's an honour to have him with us. We want to do everything we can to help him in his recovery," Libertad's Uruguayan coach Gregorio Perez said, adding it would also be a motivating factor for his squad.
"We're prepared to have him with us daily... It's important for his recovery to participate," Perez told Primero de Marzo radio.

There were hopes that Cabanas would play during some of the international friendlies after the World Cup, but this never materialised.

I feel dreadful for Salvador, ever since the shooting his life seems to have been taking repeated turns for the worse. First there was a charade over his contract/wages, and his doctors bills and taxes went unpaid while he was in hospital. I believe he is now officially a criminal in Mexico because of this, and cannot re-enter the country? There have also been several reports and court cases over his agent allegedly stealing money from him, too, although i'm not certain over how true this is. Either way, the last thing he wants to be involved in while recovering from such a horrific injury is drama over money, its great to hear some positive news!
