Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce that Jamie Carragher has signed a two year contract extension that will keep him at Anfield until June 2013.

The Reds vice captain has been a key fixture in the side since making his debut back in January 1997 and currently ranks sixth in the club's all-time list of appearances having donned the famous shirt on no fewer than 641 occasions.

The No. 23 enjoyed a testimonial against Everton earlier this year and is now in the midst of his 15th season with the club.

He has won no fewer than 10 major honours with the Reds, including two FA Cups, two League Cups, a UEFA Cup and the Champions League.

Jamie Carragher fulfils boyhood dream of scoring for Everton against Liverpool in Anfield testimonial

Defender on target at both ends in star-studded derby...

Jamie Carragher’s testimonial at Anfield ended in a 4-1 victory for Liverpool and saw the veteran fulfil a lifetime ambition and score for his boyhood club Everton, with an own goal penalty.

The Reds boasted a side that included former stars Jason McAteer, Luis Garcia, Emile Heskey and somewhat controversially, Manchester United striker Michael Owen for the veteran's big day. England captain Steven Gerrard also made a brief appearance for the first 10 minutes after being given special dispensation from Fabio Capello to take part.

SINCE breaking into Liverpool’s first team 13 years ago, Jamie Carragher has played alongside all those who have established themselves as modern Anfield greats.

From Steve McManaman through to Fernando Torres, Carragher has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the men who will be revered forever more and seen at first hand what separates the great from the good.

There have been a number of fine teams in that period, but deciding on a definitive XI is easier said than done. Who, for example, leads the line? What formation would get the best out of them? Which men should pull the strings in the engine room?

Typically, though, Carragher – whose testimonial against Everton takes place at Anfield this afternoon – is up for the challenge of picking an all-star line up.

But there is one important rule: he can’t pick himself.

So, with that in mind, here he reveals the identity of a team he thinks would conquer all before them and score plenty of goals on the way. Some choices are predictable, others less so . . .

Speaking ahead of the 32-year-old's testimonial on Saturday, the skipper admits he wouldn't have nearly as many medals in his personal collection if it wasn't for Liverpool's No.23.

And in this frank and revealing interview about his close pal, Gerrard reflects on their early years together as well as Carragher's contribution in Istanbul and what the future might hold for the Bootle-born defender.

 • Man Utd striker will line-up alongside former team-mates
• Owen uncertain about reaction from Anfield crowd

Michael Owen has not worn a Liverpool shirt since leaving the club

Michael Owen is to pull on the colours of Liverpool for the first time since leaving the club six years ago after agreeing to brave a potential backlash from Manchester United's supporters by playing for his old team in Jamie Carragher's testimonial match. Owen, reviled by some Liverpool fans after crossing one of the game's oldest divides, is said to be uncertain of the reaction he will get from the Anfield crowd but does not have great expectations considering the abuse when he returned last season for the first time since joining their rivals at Old Trafford.

The former England striker has given his word to Carragher, however, that he will play in the match at Anfield on Saturday week, swapping the red of United for that of the team where he began his career. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has given him permission to play for 45 minutes and Owen will be in attack for a Liverpool XI taking on an Everton XI.

Carragher has also persuaded Jamie Redknapp, Danny Murphy, Jason McAteer and Emile Heskey to play, but he had told Owen he would understand if he thought it was too delicate for him politically bearing in mind the rivalry between Liverpool and United.

There is also the distinct possibility that United's fans will not be too impressed about one of their players being willing to wear a Liverpool shirt, especially with their first encounter of the season to follow only two weekends later.

Owen, though, regards Carragher as one of his closest friends in football and the organisers hope the goodwill felt towards the long-serving Liverpool defender will persuade the Anfield crowd to go easy on their former player and maybe even demonstrate some warmth and appreciation for a man who scored over 200 goals for the club in eight years and has been described by Steven Gerrard as "the best striker in the history of Liverpool Football Club." (HAHA) Nonetheless, it is understood Owen will be given his own security on his way to and from the stadium.

This should be amusing. Aww bless, some people thinking because it's a testimonial, the Scousers will go easy on Owen. No chance. XD

Hey, so I've been a bit of a lurker on this community for a while, but I love it and since I just got back from Liverpool and saw the opening game--my first game ever, since I live a bit far from there--I wanted to make my first post because. Because. The game was incredible (even though sexy Cesc wasn't there) and the Anfield atmosphere was beyond amazing. The best. But unbelievably...

On the way there, we flew into London and then connected on a one-hour flight to Manchester. Which seemed really lame and tiresome. BUT. Martin Skrtel was on our flight! We sat in the second to last row and he sat right behind us with his girlfriend and some other guy... they spoke only in Slovakian. My brother tried to talk to him and failed...but we got a picture in the end. And match pictures!

And no, he never smiles. )

Roy Hodgson has revealed his delight at the content of his talks with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher - and the new boss is confident of a similar outcome when he meets with Fernando Torres after the World Cup.

Just hours after being confirmed as Liverpool manager last Thursday, Hodgson met with Gerrard and Carragher - and later Academy Ambassador Kenny Dalglish - in his new office at Melwood.

And the tactician was left thrilled with the positive nature of the conversations.

"I think they went splendidly," Hodgson told LFC Weekly. "I was very happy to meet the players and, of course, Kenny who I already know so well.

"I was delighted to see how positive they are. Everybody is looking forward towards to the new season."

He added: "Obviously Steven and Jamie are the playing heartbeat of the club and it's very important we keep people like that with us.

"I anticipate there might be a situation where other big clubs will try and sign Steven, but he gave me no indication that he wanted to leave.

"Nobody at the club wants him to go so I will be doing my utmost to make sure he stays. I am confident he will."

Daniel Agger has reasserted his commitment to Liverpool despite the departure of the man who brought him to Anfield.

The 25-year-old, who was signed by Rafael Benitez in January 2006, claims the Spaniard's exit has no bearing on his future.

"The time with him was good. He is a good manager, he knows his stuff and he knows what football is about," said Agger.

"When I return from my summer holiday, I'll see what is new, but his exit has no bearing on my future. I'm committed to Liverpool."

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has wished Benitez all the best in his new job in Italy.

"I would like to thank Rafael Benitez for what he did for me and wish him luck at Inter Milan," he said.

"Hopefully we can get a manager as quickly as we can, then we can start to look to the future."

• Former Germany captain says England have gone backwards
• Germans have advantage with Jabulani, says Carragher

Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer has launched a scathing attack on England's style of play and claimed Fabio Capello's side have "gone backwards into the bad old times of kick and rush".

Beckenbauer, one of the most decorated footballers of all time and captain of the triumphant West Germany team of 1974, claimed Capello had been rendered powerless by the paucity of English players featuring regularly in the higher echelons of the Premier League. The clubs' willingness to buy from abroad, he argued, has come back to haunt the national side.

"What I saw from the English in their 1-1 draw against the United States had very little to do with football," Beckenbauer wrote in a South African newspaper after watching England's draw on Saturday.

"It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old times of kick and rush. I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there. The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League clubs as they use better foreign players from all over the world."

I was going to save this for after the Japan friendly in case there were any standout performances there, but eh, I figured if there are, I can just come back and change my mind.

Basically, next Tuesday, Capello will be naming his 23-man-squad (much later than most of the participating nations in the World Cup are), and I was wondering who you girls would pick as the seven to cull?

So that’s who I’d cut, and who I think Capello will cut. How about you, ladies?

The Liverpool defender, officially retired from international football two years ago, wrote in his autobiography that he “would rather miss a penalty for England than for Liverpool”, and that “losing with England never hurt in the same way as losing with my club”.

England fans have booed Terry, Ashley Cole and David Bentley in recent games and Carragher has admitted he is not expecting an easy ride.

“Better players than me have been booed by supporters,” he said. “If it happens I won’t have any problem with it because I know that if Liverpool had a player who left the club and came back three years later, there would be some fans that wouldn’t be happy with him.

“These things can take a bit of time so I will understand if the reaction at Wembley isn’t that fantastic.”

Capello has asked England’s fans to support Carragher tomorrow night in their last game at Wembley before the finals. The England manager is an admirer of Carragher’s on-pitch leadership and tactical versatility and made four previous efforts to persuade the 32-year-old defender to come out of retirement.

Carragher, who was motivated by the chance to work with Capello, insists that his return was not made on condition of him being part of the squad for South Africa. “I haven’t been given any guarantees about a place in the 23,” he said.

“The manager knows me from playing for Liverpool so he probably watches me once every three weeks throughout the season. But he doesn’t know what I’m like around the hotel, what I’m like on the training pitch; he doesn’t know me well enough to guarantee anything.

"I have joined up with the squad in the hope that I do what I do for Liverpool and the manager deems it good enough to warrant a place at the World Cup.”

Joe Cole returns to the fold for the first time since England's 4-1 victory in Zagreb in 2008, joining his Chelsea colleagues John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole who secured the Premier League title on Sunday and compete in The FA Cup Final against Portsmouth this Saturday.

Capello index postponed.. )

Jamie Carragher is set to make an extraordinary England comeback at the World Cup finals after telling Fabio Capello he is ready to return from self-imposed international exile.

Carragher will be named on Tuesday in Capello’s preliminary 30-man squad for the World Cup, having been talked out of retirement in a series of secret discussions with Franco Baldini, the England general manager and Capello’s right-hand man.

Carragher, 32, had rejected several approaches from Capello and his predecessor, Steve McClaren, since announcing his retirement from international football in July 2007, but, against all expectations, the Liverpool defender has finally been persuaded to return to the squad.

The news comes as a shock, given Carragher’s previous intransigence and some of the outspoken comments he made about England in his autobiography in 2008, but Capello and Baldini made a concerted bid to entice the Liverpool vice-captain back into the fold amid concerns about their defensive options for the tournament.

Carragher’s versatility means he would travel in the final 23-man squad as understudy to Glen Johnson at right back and as cover in central defence. With Capello determined to take Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King, despite their injury problems, as well as John Terry, it leaves players such as Wes Brown, Phil Jagielka, Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott in danger of missing out on the finals.

In another dramatic development, Owen Hargreaves has re-emerged as an outside bet for the preliminary squad after an injury to Gareth Barry, the Manchester City midfield player. Barry is in serious danger of missing the World Cup after being told that his ankle injury could take anything between three and eight weeks to heal, leaving Capello to consider a call-up for one of Hargreaves, who has just returned to action for Manchester United after 19 months out with a serious knee injury, Tom Huddlestone, of Tottenham Hotspur, or Scott Parker, of West Ham United.

Dirk Kuyt's first kit: "It was probably an AC Milan shirt because at the time they had van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard. I used to have those names on the back. These days my kids have the Liverpool home, away and third kits. They love running around in them and wear them every time they go to the match."

Liverpool boys on film as Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard star in comedy ripping 'drunk' Sir Alex Ferguson and 'rat' Gary Neville

Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher star in a new film which pokes fun at Sir Alex Ferguson and Gary Neville.

Manchester United manager Ferguson has been portrayed as a whisky-loving drunk while club captain Neville is labelled a rat who hates Scousers.

Fifteen Minutes That Shook the World is a sideways look at what went on in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time in the 2005 Champions League final before the Reds fought back from 3-0 down to AC Milan.

LFC BOYS MEN ON THE RED CARPET

A CLIP OF THE FILM WITH STEVIE G AND CARRA IN IT.
ITS ACTUALLY HILARIOUS.

And in one scene a Sir Alex lookalike phones a player (who is not unlike Neville) to celebrate Liverpool's misery.

The player has the name 'Rat Boy' on his back and sings a song about hating people from Liverpool.
When Rafa Benitez's side turn the game on its head by winning on penalties, the Fergie character, called McTaggart, knocks back a bottle of whisky with Manager of the Month but not as good as Bob Paisley' written on it.
The 43-minute comedy, by Liverpool playwright Dave Kirby, is sure to rile the Red Devils while Carragher and Gerrard, who have cameos in the production, attended the premiere this week with Benitez.
