England’s record women’s goalscorer, Kelly Smith has retired from international football. The 36-year-old Arsenal Ladies striker scored 46 times in 117 appearances for her country, playing at the 2007 and 2011 World Cups and at four European Championships, as well as for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

Her role had become reduced in the national squad, however, with Eni Aluko, Toni Duggan, Natasha Dowie, Lianne Sanderson and Fran Kirby moving ahead of her in the pecking order and she might have struggled to make Mark Sampson’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, which takes place in Canada, but chose to retire on her own terms.

She said in a statement: “After a lot of consideration and many conversations, I have made the toughest decision of my career to retire from international football. I feel exceptionally proud and honoured to have played for England for 20 wonderful years. I have enjoyed every single minute of representing my country and wearing the England shirt. The memories will stay with me all my life.

“I am grateful to have played under Hope Powell and to have had such an amazing support system from my family, friends and all my team-mates.”

Smith made her England debut against Italy in November 1995, and won her last cap against Ukraine last May. She will play on for Arsenal and added: “I am confident the current wealth of talent that Mark Sampson has in the England squad can achieve something special at the World Cup in Canada this summer.”

England’s captain, Steph Houghton, said: “I consider Kelly Smith to be England’s best-ever player and feel honoured to have had her as a team-mate. She will be most definitely missed around the camp. When I first came into the set-up she was the first person to welcome me into the squad and has been someone I’ve really looked up to as a player and as a person.”

Sampson told the FA’s website: “Kelly will be remembered as one of the iconic players in the history of the women’s international game. The term ‘world class’ is often overused but when looking back over Kelly’s international career she has consistently shown on the biggest stage she was without a doubt one of the greatest ever players.

“Her legacy is not only on the field but off it. There are thousands of young girls who would count Kelly as their inspiration as well as a number of our current senior squad. Her ability combined with her determination to win made her a fantastic role model for our current group of senior and youth players.

“Kelly has been a pleasure to work with, her professionalism has been second to none. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to work with her. I know the type of person Kelly is – she will be the biggest supporter of this team in the summer at the World Cup. I wish Kelly all the very best for her future.”

Fact: Kelly has scored the same number of goals as Wayne Rooney in internationals but she's got 117 caps to Wazza's 109. Had she scored 5 more goals, she would have been England's top goalscorer among men and women.

.... to join Sky Sports!

Thierry Henry posted this on his Facebook page today:

"After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football. It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special.
It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports. I will hopefully share some of the insights, observations and experiences I have learnt over the years with you guys.
I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience.
I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part.
See you on the other side..."

One step closer to coming back to Arsenal.

He says "my body suffered enough for one lifetime"
Oh Daniel - you will be missed.

In other news, Per Mertesacker considers retirement from the National Team, Zlatan Ibrahimovic announces that he will retire from football during the next two years and Javi Martinez suffered a rupture of his frontal crossed ligament (lig. cruciatum craniale), will have surgery in the US soon and will be out for the whole first part of the season. Which - rumours running wild - brings us back to Sami Khedira and Mehdi Benatira who seem to be on Bayern's agenda for possible substitutes.

Manchester City's French midfielder Samir Nasri has decided to quit international football over a breakdown in his relationship with national coach Didier Deschamps and the French media.

The 27-year-old playmaker won the Premier League last season with City but was left out of the France squad for this year's World Cup in Brazil, where the side reached the quarter-finals.

Deschamps later filed a legal complaint for 'public insult' against Nasri's girlfriend, Anara Atanes, for messages she posted on Twitter after the player was omitted from the France squad. "Let's face it, as long as he (Deschamps) is going to be the manager I don't think I have a shot after everything that has happened," Nasri told reporters before Sunday's Community Shield against his former club Arsenal.

"I will only be 29 in 2016 for the European Championships (hosted by France) but the French national team doesn't make me happy. Every time I go there, there is just more trouble. "I face accusations about me and my family suffers from it and I don't want to make them suffer, so it's better to stop it and focus on my club career."

Nasri, who has been capped 41 times, has a reputation as a troublemaker and was banned for three matches after launching a foul-mouthed tirade at a reporter following France's quarter-final defeat by Spain at Euro 2012. The player also missed the 2010 World Cup when former coach Raymond Domenech left him out of the squad.

Nasri said Deschamps was not the only factor that drove him towards taking a decision to quit playing for France. "He did what he thought was best for his team. I understand his choice, it is not something about him, I don't have any problem with him. It's just everything," Nasri added.

"It is not him who talks in the press, it is the press who say things about me and the players as well. "Before this World Cup, they were saying that some players complain (about him). Why do you want me to be in the group with some players who can't even be true in front of me and tell me that they have a problem? "I don't want to be there. I am not happy. I don't want to go there any more."

I'm sorry but I can't respect him when he blames the press, the coaches, the players and everyone else for his poor performance with Les Bleus. Like can he not even admit the least amount of culpability with his irresponsible behavior? I won't miss him

The Chelsea striker has decided to focus on his club career after scoring 65 goals in 104 appearances for the Elephants

Cote d'Ivoire icon Didier Drogba has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 36.

The Chelsea striker represented the Elephants at this summer's World Cup in Brazil but has now decided to focus on his club career after scoring 65 times in 104 appearances for his country.

"It is with much sadness that I have decided to retire from international football," Drogba wrote in a statement released on Friday.

"These past 12 years in the national team have been full of emotions. From my first call-up to my last match, I have always tried to give my best for my country.

"I am very proud to have been captain of this team for eight years and to have contributed to placing my country on the world stage of football, taking part in three World Cups and two African Cup of Nations finals.

"I cannot convey enough thanks to the fans for all the love and support during these years. All my goals, all my caps, all our victories are for you - I love you."

Landon Donovan will retire at the end of the 2014 MLS season according to Taylor Twellman. Donovan, who turned 32 in March, has been with the LA Galaxy since 2005. Donovan has scored 105 goals in 229 appearances for the club.

All of this is from multiple sources and nothing is concrete but basically Twellerman aired it out. I'll update.

BREAKING NEWS | Xavi Hernández announces he quits the Spanish National Football Team (@SeFutbol)

----

He was capped 133 times, more than any other Spanish outfield player, and scored 13 goals.

He told a press conference in Barcelona: "I'm grateful for all those years. It has been a fantastic time."

Xavi said: "I was going to retire after Euro 2012 but head coach Vicente del Bosque persuaded me to stay on and go to Brazil which was of course a huge disappointment for everyone and myself individually.

"After Euro 2012, it was generally understood I was going to be leaving after Brazil 2014. I hope Del Bosque stays as manager as Spain because I don't think there is a better man for the job.

"I want to thank everyone involved in that team for the way they treated me and the respect and I could not wish for a better time as an international."
