I also loved this delightful paragraph:
"That would still be lower than the last reported wage bills of Manchester City £233 million and Manchester United £215 million, but would be more than Chelsea’s £173 million and Liverpool’s £133 million. What will be particularly interesting is the impact that FFP has on clubs like Manchester City, who admitted this was the reason they loaned Negredo to Valencia in the summer, and Chelsea, whose wage bill seems to have stalled and whose manager Jose Mourinho can (incredibly) now be counted among its fiercest exponents – at least when discussing City.
Enough of the profit and loss account, the main financial topic on the lips of Arsenal fans these days is that huge cash balance. Guess what? It’s gone up again, rising another £55 million in the last 12 months from £153 million to £208 million. For some reason the club’s headline statement insists on reporting this as net of debt service reserves of £35 million, giving the widely reported figure of £173 million, but the actual cash balance is indeed north of £200 million.
To place that into context, the next highest cash balances in the Premier League in the 2012/13 season were Manchester United £94 million, Chelsea £26 million and Southampton £14 million. Since then, United’s 2013/14 balance has come down to £66 million, so Arsenal’s cash balance really is in a class of its own, over three times as much as the next highest figure."

Date: 2014-09-24 03:30 pm (UTC)I understand it to be tricky. Unlike a lot of the richer clubs at the moment, "Arsenal" as a brand is based on 100 years of very consistent excellence, a grand history, and a number of events that make the club completely unique throughout that history - everything from Highbury, to Emirates, to Feverpitch, to our three doubles, to our history of very long-serving coaches (Arsenal coaches stick around), our perceived cosmopolitanism, our location (London is important) to a weirdly fanatical fanbase that has bought into certain ideas about the club.
Although we were the creme de la creme 10 years ago, that was part of a cycle that the club participates in fairly regularly about every decade and a half over the last century. The club perpetually goes through cycles. But it has, under Wenger, learned to remain in the elite competitions even in times of great difficulty (let's hope that lesson stays with the club after he leaves).
That keeps us as popular (or more popular) than the current leaders of our league or the team most people think will win it this year - who find their popularity largely based on the fact they are...winning.
And for Arsenal, that has to be leveraged into some money a bit better.
We have very few sponsorships, for example. That is a good policy, in some ways, but we get most of our sponsorship money from deals with two sources. That's a balancing act. You want to remain exclusive and not end up covered in stupid advertising all over your shirt, for example.
At any rate - it's good news and a solid report. They don't have as much money as some think, but they manage it responsibly and are solidly in the black.

Date: 2014-09-22 08:11 pm (UTC)this is why i am not an accountant and my sister is. :|
but looking at the comparisons, i'm glad Arsenal is in good financial standing. I hope with that stability, it means we can progress / win things. especially the last part. particularly the last part.
let's support alexis in his dreamzzzz :')

Date: 2014-09-22 08:35 pm (UTC)I mean, I say that, but there's no guarantee. Real is up to their neck in debt, they won the UCL last year (and we never have T_____T) But a couple of things have me hopeful with this financial stability including Wenger's crop of home-grown players he practically raised finally coming into their prime and the club's ability to purchase world-class players like Ozil and Alexis.
Btw sis did you see Mesut posting new wallpapers for fans? :D He just updated today on his FB:

I'm experiencing some delirious glee at this one (though the graphic quality of the wallpaper itself is a little questionable XDD) I almost feel bad for the RMA fans who are still mourning his loss. Well, almost.

Date: 2014-09-22 09:06 pm (UTC)if only the government were as tightly run as Arsenal's finances.
Hell, if only anything was as tightly run. I'm actually shocked Arsenal is doing a better job than United. They always seem like they're sooooo much richer than like, everyone combined.
