The Kuwait national team was crowned champion of the 20th edition of the Gulf Cup of Nations , also known as Khaleeji 20, after its victory in the final against Saudi Arabia.
This win allowed Kuwait achieve the tenth title in its history after the cup that eluded them for 12 years since 1998 when Kuwait won itís ninth title in Bahrain.
The winner came from the brilliant Waleed Ali in the fourth minute of extra time after an excellent solo effort where he chased the ball, which passed through the Saudi defense, before overcoming one of the defenders and proceeding to direct the ball to the left of the helpless Saudi keeper.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia faced only once before in the final match of Khaleeji 3 which was held in Kuwait in 1974 where the Hosts, Kuwait, cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory.
Kuwait won its first title in the first edition that was held in Bahrain in 1970 where Kuwaitís golden generation of football played began a successful legacy of winning the Gulf Cup in three consecutive tournaments in the years 1972 and 1974 and 1976 before adding the titles of 1982, 1986, 1990, 1996, 1998 and finally after 12 years they won their 10th Gulf Cup in 2010.
In contrast, the Saudi team won the title three times in the years 1994, 2002 and 2003 and coming second six times.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia faced 18 times in the history of the Gulf Cup, the last being in the first round of the current tournament in Yemen, which ended in a goalless draw between them.
The victory achieved by Kuwait's is itís eighth win against Saudi Arabia in the history of the tournament with four wins for Saudi Arabia and seven ties between them.
Kuwaiti players swept the majority of the awards, in which Kuwaitís break out star Fahad Al-Enzi received the award for best player of the tournament, team mate Nawaf Al-Khaldi for best Goal Keeper and Kuwaitís Bader Al-Mutawa for top scorer of Khaleeji 20.
Saudi Arabia also won the Fair Play Award.
I have NEVER been this happy before!! i swear last night Kuwait didn't sleep!!
The new Golden Generation finally came home..with the cup =)
