Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid fans should follow Manchester United way

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Real Madrid fans do not support their team enough when they are playing badly and should try to be as intimidating to visiting teams as Manchester United supporters, according to Cristiano Ronaldo.

"We know that we have the duty to put on a show but sometimes it's not possible," the Portuguese forward, who joined Real from United, told the Spanish sports newspaper Marca.

"We always try but at times the team are not playing well and the fans could give us more support. The Manchester United fans, for example, were very intimidating for Liverpool or Manchester City in those matches. I think that if our supporters tried to do that it would be much better for everyone and would give the players a big boost."

Ronaldo, who returned to action in late November after two months out with an ankle injury, said his fitness was improving. He also said he intended to win back the Fifa World Player of the Year award after Barcelona's Lionel Messi won the 2009 prize this month.

"I have the ambition to be the best," Ronaldo said. "By God's grace I have already won the trophy for the best player in the world but I hope to win it again, either this year or next, but I will win it again."

Whatever, Cristiano.

You tell them Ronnie though I've got to say, United fans also need to learn to turn up the volume when playing 'other' teams..It shouldn't just be for the 'big' teams. But yeah, I'm proud that we rarely if ever boo our team even say when we lose 3-0 to Fulham or last season when we were 2-0 to Tottenham at home with the title on the line..Chelsea been doing it a lot lately.

generally, the spanish and english fans are nothing alike. also, rm fans are known to expect A LOT.

the way they played some of the matches this season, idk, i think the fans that paid for the ticket had a right to voice their disappointment.

I can see what he is trying to say - when a team isn't playing too well, that is the time the players need the crowd to be behind them and give them the confidence to snap out of it and play better, it isn't the time they need the extra pressure of the crowd getting at them too - but La Liga and EPL fans are totally different.

I love the way that Utd supporters get behind the team, especially in the big games but there's a different mentality between EPL fans and La Liga fans.

Booing never helps, but if most of the team is only present on the field IN BODY and then allows us to lose by 5 or 6 goals then I think its warranted....and thats usually the case.

That being said, we're coming into the New Year on a good note, I'm kind of confused as to why he's bringing this up. *shrugs*

I remember Robinho saying something similar to this effect, when he moved to Man City, and they asked him the difference between Mancunian fans and Madrisdistas

It's pre-match, whats your point?

At least we didn't spend all last season booing our own team at half time when they were DRAWING,haha. It's better to be silent then do stuff like that :)

This is a bit out of context (I've read the whole thing from Marca, and no, it's not exactly how they put it here). He says the fans are great when they're playing good (which is LOGIC), but when they play not-so-well, the expectation of the fans is tangible (and he has a point) so the players feel that pressure... And it doesn't help so much. Then he compares it with the Manchester fans in matches like 'Pool or City.

Anyway, he hasn't played any "important" match in the Bernabéu yet (maybe against OM in Champions)... But the Atlético or Barça matches are just different (and it's not only the match itself, it's the rivalry, the previous days with every fucking person talking about it, it's the entire Madrid city seething).

I actually agree. Real Madrid is the Royal club, and of course, it is expected of them to perform the best. It sucks that a lot of their fans are like this. That's why I love Liverpool so much.

I'd always been told that Man Utd was fairly tame with regards to it's crowd...the rawn sandwich brigade & all that.

My feelings regarding crowds at United games depend on whether we're away on not. Most of the time I want to reach through the telly screen and slap the fans at Old Trafford.

But I am proud that we don't boo our team.

I kinda agree with him... although he shouldn't be comparing british and spanish fans because it's absolutely useless. I do understand why RM fans boo their players even though I wouldn't do it myself.

On a side note, I think that the best fans are in Brazil. Not only because of their fidelity to the team, but because of the whole energy on the stadium during the game.

bottom line, moving to Madrid was his "childhood dream" so he should suck it up if it's not turning out to be how he imagined.

typical spoiled brat behaviour here.
