i have no idea who i voted for as leftback, but evra wasn't too good last season and abidal was injured far too much. so i picked that guy from wolfsburg lol. i woulda picked puyi as my leftback though, he sucked as CB last season
i picked forlan because he won european goldenshoe, took atleti to the CL, and DIDN'T throw the pichichi away...........
Dammit, I can't use this, as my only internet access right now is from my mobile which doesn't do shiny stuff like this. But here is who I would vote for anyway:
VDS Fletcher Carrick Brown Evra Valencia Anderson Scholes Gibson Giggs Rooney
Hey, if Fergie can put them in those crazy ass positions, so can I! Bias, what bias?! :P
Here's my take on it - this is not EXCLUSIVELY based on who, according to my football expertise, was the best on his position during UEFA competitions over the year - if I feel someone is in need of some recognition, he'll get my nod. This was the case with Hrubesch (a legend in every sense, one of the best strikers of his age and a great youth coach) and Berg (hey, he's a HSVer and therefore MY LAD now) and to a lesser degree Alonso and Ozil.
Yes, this is Barca heavy like whoa, but after this season, they DO deserve it, especially defensively (with all other options considered).
Lahm has NO place there whatsoever, seeing as we judge club/UEFA performance only. Mertesacker neither, I am afraid.
Casillas, Ronaldo, Messi, Alves, Abidal - all in all the best in their club seasons over the last year in my book.
Berg (what the hell is he doing here?! Okay, he rocked the Dutch league like Messi did Spain, but he's still got a long way to go) because he's a HSVer and will one day achieve moderate greatness that will at least carry him to the position of second striker of a top club of the PL.
Xabi Alonso - had a great Liverpool season (from all he got to play) and he IS my favorite currently active midfielder. Xavi may be the better director in midfield and a tad more skilled with the ball(tad? who am I kidding here?) but as a German, I like my midfielders a bit tougher, a bit more physical. Apart from that, he's got one hell of an eye and a great sense of timing for the proper pass and the on-pitch relationship he had with Gerrard during their prime you only see once in a decade in European football. Plus, I had to balance out the Barca-bias. ;)
Pique is a great centerback with a promising future, but the present (still) belongs to Terry. Centerback of the decade, quite possibly. One more such season - and he's all set for that, and he'll overtake Canna in my personal book of epic cents. Bloody grand defender, and I most definitely DO NOT have a Chelsea bias going for me.
Puyol never ceases to amaze me. He plays a style of defense that is sometimes bordering the archaic - the last man to go for the old slashing tackle regularily with FULL commitment but without mauling his opponents legs in the process but actually playing the DAMN BALL and NOT fouling. When he retires, central defending will lose the personification of the "inter defense style period" of players: those who were in their youths still trained as man-markers and were the first to be employed in zone defense. As a traditionalist, I know I will be sad to see the last of those go who still knew what a real damn tackle was and how to perform it WITHOUT getting carded or sent off right away. And that marvellous fighting spirit of his is something to behold.
Gerrard to me always was a step above the rest. That man LIVES football. And he's been pretty constantly great at it for many, many years. Any club in the world can only wish for a midfielder - a captain like him.
Horst Hrubesch as coach because he won it all - the German championship, the UEFA cup and the CL (with HSV!), the 1980 Euros, he stood in a world cup final and led two successive generations of German babies to the very top of Europe. And he's as down-to-earth as any man can be.
